Thanksgiving is coming. Leave the cooking to us.

November is upon us, and in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we’re reflecting on all of the things we’re thankful for this year.

  1. We work in diverse city with lush forests, sandy beaches, endless hiking trails, swimming holes, recreational opportunities and vibrant communities.
  2. We were able to fund new programs for special populations this year. Using 2015 ramp-up funding for the Seattle Park District, we were able to expand dementia-friendly recreation programming and add an extra week of Specialized Programs summer camp to our offerings. We hope to continue expanding programs for underserved communities.
  3. The National Wildlife Federation named Seattle the sixth friendliest city for wildlife in the country.
  4. Volunteers donated nearly 13,000 hours of their time to Seattle parks in April during Earth Month work parties. These volunteers and the community members they inspire represent the current and future generation of environmental leaders, and we’re so thankful for all they do.
  5. We welcomed Jesús Aguirre as our new superintendent.

What are you thankful for this year? If free food is on the list, we’ll hope you’ll join us at an upcoming Thanksgiving feast.

Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!

The Seattle Fire Department reminds residents to be mindful of fire safety during this holiday season. Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking-related fires.  Other holiday-related home fires involve heating and electrical sources.

Here are a few safety tips to make your Thanksgiving safer:

  • Keep an adult by the stove while cooking your favorite dishes!
  • Involve children in preparing foods that are not hot, and at least 3 feet from a hot stove.
  • Check on food regularly while cooking – unattended cooking is the number one cause of home fires
  • Unplug kitchen electrical items which have a heating element such as coffee pots, rice cookers and toasters, when not in use.
  • Extinguish candles before leaving the room and before going to bed.  Better yet, use flameless candles.
  • Give your heaters space! Keep flammable items 1 foot from baseboard heaters and 3 feet from portable space heaters.
  • If a fire starts on the stove top, cover it with a lid or metal cookie sheet and turn the stove off. Do not throw water on a grease fire.

Using a turkey fryer?  Get some safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association.

Give thanks with Seattle Parks and Recreation

Here at Seattle Parks and Recreation we have a lot to be thankful for. Our incredible staff and innovative projects received awards from the Washington Recreation and Park Association, Seattle Management Association, the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Seattle Design Commission this year. We had volunteers donate nearly 10,000 hours restoring our parks during Earth Month in April. Seattle voters approved Proposition 1 in August creating a parks district which will provide sustainable funding for Seattle Parks ensuring that our programs and facilities can continue to serve your communities.
