Events Traffic Advisory for Wednesday, Jan. 17–Tuesday, Jan. 23

SDOT advises travelers to be aware of the following events in the city that may affect area traffic. The Womxn’s March on Seattle goes from Capitol Hill to Seattle Center on Saturday morning. The Seattle Gift Show at the Washington State Convention Center runs Saturday through Tuesday.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 19:

Private Event at CenturyLink Field Event Center, evening hours. About 20,000 people are expected to attend.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 20:

Power to the Polls: Anniversary of the Womxn’s March on Seattle: Seattle Police will escort the march from Cal Anderson Park to Seattle Center via Pine St, 4th Ave, Cedar St, 5th Ave N, and Harrison St. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. About 40,000 people are expected to participate.

The Comedy Get Down at KeyArena at 8 p.m. About 4,500 people are expected to attend.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 20 – TUESDAY, JANUARY 23:

Seattle Gift Show at the Washington State Convention Center. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday through Monday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday. About 5,000 people a day are expected to attend.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 21:

Ethiopian Orthodox Churches – Epiphany Celebration March: March begins at Kings Hall, located at 27th Ave S and MLK Jr Way S, continues south on MLK Jr Way S to St. Michael Church, located at 67th Ave S and MLK Jr Way S. March begins at 10:30 a.m. About 500 people are expected to participate.

Westbound S Cloverdale St Closure for Safe Routes to School Project

SDOT advises travelers of a closure underway of the westbound direction of S Cloverdale St between Martin Luther King Jr Way S and Beacon Ave S that began on Monday, January 15. The westbound closure is expected to be in place for up to 2 months, with work in the area expected to continue through April 2018, weather permitting.

For the next two months, approximately, travelers can expect:

  • Westbound S Cloverdale St will be closed to traffic between Martin Luther King Jr Way S and Beacon Ave S
    • Westbound drivers should follow a signed detour to S Graham St
  • Eastbound traffic on S Cloverdale St will remain open
  • Access will be maintained to homes on the north and south sides of S Cloverdale St even though the westbound lane will be closed

This construction is part of the Wing Luke Elementary and Van Asselt Elementary Safe Routes to School Project, which includes new sidewalk, curb ramps, and planting strips along S Cloverdale St and 37th Ave S. The westbound closure is required due to the narrow width of the street. Events Traffic Advisory for Tuesday, Jan. 9 – Monday, Jan. 15

SDOT advises travelers to be aware of the following events in the city that may affect area traffic. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close the Battery Street Tunnel/SR99 on Saturday morning. Several Martin Luther King Jr. Day events will be happening through the weekend.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 11:

Martin Luther King March Roosevelt: Students will assemble at the UW Husky Stadium at 6:30 a.m. and march to Roosevelt High School. Seattle Police will escort the march from 6:45 a.m. to 8 a.m. About 105 students are expected to participate.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 12:

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday March: Students from McDonald International School will march on sidewalks in the Green Lake/Latona neighborhood in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Seattle Police will escort the march from 8:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. About 460 students are expected to participate.

Martin Luther King March – Orca K-8: Students march from Orca K-8 School to Columbia City. Seattle Police will escort the march from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. About 400 students are expected to participate.

MLK March for Peace & Justice – Giddens School: Students march from Giddens School to Pratt Park in the Central District. Seattle Police will escort the march from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. About 300 students are expected to participate.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 13:

Battery Street Tunnel/SR99 closure by WSDOT from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. between Western Ave and Seneca St for inspection.

Martin Luther King Jr. Youth March and Celebration: Seattle Parks and Recreation invites the public to join a youth-organized march to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Seattle Police will escort a student march from MLK Memorial Park to Rainier Community Center from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. About 200 students are expected to participate.

MONDAY, JANUARY 15:

Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Celebration and March: Events begin 8:30 a.m. at Garfield High School followed by a rally at 11 a.m. and march at 12:30 p.m. to Westlake Park. About 8,000 people are expected to attend.

Safe Routes to School Project for Rainier View Elementary on Beacon Hill begins January 2 

SDOT advises travelers that construction for the Rainier View Elementary Safe Routes to School Project will begin as soon as Tuesday, January 2, and continue through April 2018. Work on Beacon Ave S, S Bangor St, and 55th Ave S will include new marked crossings, curb bulbs and speed humps near Rainier View Elementary. This work is weather dependent.

From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays beginning Tuesday, January 2, through April 2018, travelers can expect:

  • Potential traffic delays due to temporary lane closures on Beacon Ave S (outside of morning and afternoon school peak traffic times)
  • Flaggers to help maintain 2-way traffic around the work zone
  • Temporary pedestrian detours
  • Temporary bus stop closures for King County Metro Route 107
  • Temporary parking restrictions with 72-hour notice

This work is part of the Rainier View Elementary Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Project to improve safety and access on the walking and biking route to school. Construction is funded by a Washington Department of Transportation SRTS grand and the 9-year Levy to Move Seattle, approved by voters in 2015.

Events Traffic Advisory for Tuesday, Nov. 21 – Sunday, Nov. 26

SDOT advises travelers to be aware of the following events in the city that may affect traffic. The annual Macy’s Holiday Parade is on Friday morning in downtown Seattle. The Holiday Tree Lighting is Friday night also downtown. The UW Huskies host WSU in the Apple Cup on Saturday evening at Husky stadium. The Seattle Marathon starts and finishes at Seattle Center with the race route through Seward Park on Sunday morning. Please note freeway off-ramp closures due to the Holiday Parade and the Seattle Marathon.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 22:

Kid Cudi Concert at WaMu Theater at CenturyLink Field at 9 p.m. Doors open at 8 p.m. About 7,200 people are expected to attend.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 23:

Seattle Turkey Trot: A 5K run/walk in Ballard starts at 9 a.m. at NW 85th St and 32nd Ave NW and finishes in Golden Gardens Park via Seaview Ave NW. About 4,500 people are expected to participate.

Montlake 5K Turkey Trot & Kids Run: Starts at 9:30 a.m. at E Lynn St and 25th Ave E and continues through the Arboretum Loop Trail. About 900 people are expected to participate.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24:

My Macy’s Holiday Parade: The 27th annual holiday parade starts at 9 a.m. at 7th Ave and Pine St, travels south on 5th Ave to University St and north on 4th to Pine St. About 20,000 people are expected to attend. Due to congestion during the parade, the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Union St will be closed from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Macy’s Starlighting & Fireworks Show: Holiday Tree Lighting and lighting of the Macy’s Star with fireworks. Program begins at 4 p.m. on Pine St between 4th and 5th Avenues. About 15,000 people are expected to attend.

Pacific Northwest Ballet’s The Nutcracker at 7:30 p.m. at McCaw Hall. About 2,900 people are expected to attend each performance.

Illenium Concert at WaMu Theater at CenturyLink Field at 8 p.m. About 7,200 people are expected to attend.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25:

Seattle Children’s Kids Marathon: Run starts at 5th Ave and Harrison St at 10 a.m. Route goes around Seattle Center: south on Broad St, west on Denny Way, north on 2nd Ave N, east on Mercer St and finishes at Memorial Stadium. About 2,400 people are expected to participate.

Pacific Northwest Ballet’s The Nutcracker at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at McCaw Hall. About 2,900 people are expected to attend each performance.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra Performances at KeyArena at 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. About 8,000 people are expected to attend each show.

Washington Huskies host Washington State in the 110th annual Apple Cup at 5 p.m. at Husky Stadium. About 70,000 people are expected to attend.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 26:

Seattle Marathon: Full and Half Marathons start and finish at Seattle Center beginning at 7:15 a.m.  Race courses use city streets including 5th Ave, S King St, Lake Washington Blvd, Lakeview Blvd, Dexter Ave N and Mercer St. About 9,000 people are expected to participate. Freeway ramps to be closed during the race:

  • Northbound I-5 off-ramp to Lakeview Blvd closed 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Westbound Mercer St two left-turn lanes to southbound Fairview Ave N closed 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • I-5 Express Lanes exit to 5th Ave/Columbia St. closed 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • Westbound SR-520 off-ramp to Roanoke St closed 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Pacific Northwest Ballet’s The Nutcracker at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at McCaw Hall. About 2,900 people are expected to attend each performance.
