Seattle Parks and Recreation begins construction of Gemenskap Park

Portion of 14th Ave. NW provides new open space for Ballard

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is moving into the construction phase on Gemenskap Park, new park located in Ballard. SPR awarded the construction contract for Gemenskap Park to Jansen, Inc. and work is planned to begin January 8, 2018. Construction will require a three month detour route on 14th Ave. NW between 58th and 60th streets. We anticipate completion of the park in late spring 2018.

This park will provide open space for the Ballard neighborhood by converting two full blocks of 14th Ave. NW between NW 59th and NW 61st streets to a new park space. The park will replace the gravel parking median and portions of the existing concrete roadway. The project includes green infrastructure and incorporates safety improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

The Parks and Green Spaces Levy Acquisition Fund provided $24 million for the acquisition of neighborhood parks in up to 20 identified areas throughout the City. The Ballard Residential Urban Village was included in that list and the community prioritized this development project in lieu of acquiring additional property.

Electronic Equipment Upgrades Planned in May 2017

Starting in mid-to-late May 2017, Seattle City Light will be supporting enhanced cellular and data services along Beacon Avenue South and Ballard Avenue Northwest by upgrading electronic equipment to utility poles throughout the public right-of-way of these neighborhoods.

This project is an expansion of existing communications networks. The equipment modifications will increase public safety and enhanced-911 capabilities. The work will also improve wireless services to areas, allowing for enhanced connectivity and faster 4G service.

During this project, City Light crews will also have the opportunity to upgrade its infrastructure and replace utility poles that are in poor condition.

There are no maintenance power outages planned for this work. Some traffic and parking impacts are expected in the immediate work areas. Crews will be careful to maintain access to driveways.

These projects are tentative to start in mid-to-late May 2017. Construction along Beacon Avenue South is expected to last approximately three to four months. Construction along Ballard Avenue Northwest is anticipated to last approximately four to five weeks.

Daily work hours are from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For more information, please contact Gina Del Giorgio, City Light Project Consultant at (425) 603-8205 or Regina.DelGiorgio2@VerizonWireless.com.

Advanced Metering Utility Pole Upgrades Continue in March 2017

In March 2017, Seattle City Light will continue supporting Advanced Metering services throughout the utility’s service territory by replacing existing utility poles with taller poles, which will host wireless utility data collection equipment. The new poles will be 70 feet tall, which is about 20 feet taller than the existing poles.

This project is part of the communications network to support Advanced Metering, which will automate meter reading and enable enhanced services.

Throughout the month of March, City Light crews will be replacing poles in the following areas:

  • Queen Anne (Galer Street)
  • Ballard (NW 46th Street)
  • Whittier Heights (8th Avenue NW)
  • Ravenna (NE 50th Street)

View the March 2017 Utility Pole Upgrade maps for approximate construction work areas. Additional maps will be added on the Utility Pole Upgrade website as the project progresses into other areas within City Light’s service territory.

There are no maintenance power outages planned for this work. Some traffic and parking impacts are expected in the immediate work areas. Crews will be careful to maintain access to driveways.

Daily work hours are from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In most instances, the work to transfer existing equipment and install the data collection equipment can be completed in one day.
