Happy 10th anniversary, Seattle Central Library!

Yesterday kicked off a week of free concerts and all-ages programs in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Seattle’s Central Library building. The week’s programs will commemorate the iconic structure, the people who helped create it and the communities the library serves.

Mayor Murray proclaimed next Friday, May 23, as Seattle Public Library Day. In the proclamation, the Mayor noted that the Central Library’s magic goes well beyond its status as an architectural icon:

“The Central Library, which opened May 23, 2004 to more than 25,000 patrons, exemplifies superb modern architecture, stands as a shining example of the power of civic engagement and demonstrates the library’s position as a foundational institution of a society characterized by the formal equality of rights and privileges. …

The Seattle Public Library is a dynamic civic resource that promotes free and open access to information, materials and services to all members of the community to advance knowledge, foster creativity, encourage the exchange of ideas, build community and enhance the quality of life.”
