Lake City Residential Fire

SEATTLE – On Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at 4:07 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 12300 block of 36th Avenue NE for a kitchen fire.

Firefighters arrived to find visible flames from the home with power lines down in the street. They quickly applied water from the exterior, working their way into the interior of the residence. The fire was successfully extinguished by 4:22 p.m.

There were no injuries from this incident. Seattle City Light was called to assist with power lines and the Red Cross to assist displaced occupants. There was one animal fatality.

Fire Investigation Unit members determined the cause of fire a result of unattended food on the stove. The estimated loss is $300,000.

Greenwood Residential Fire

SEATTLE – On Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at 1:22 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 100 NW block of 81st Street for a house fire.

Firefighters arrived to find visible flames from the two-story residence. They quickly deployed a hose line through the front door to the second floor, applied water, and ventilated smoke through the attic while checking for occupants. The fire was successfully extinguished by 1:45 a.m.

The homeowner advised firefighters that the fire was in the upstairs bathroom and there was no one inside the home.

There were no injuries from this incident. Firefighters remained on-scene overnight for fire watch.

Fire Investigation Unit members determined the cause of fire to be an electrical malfunction in the bathroom exhaust fan. The estimated loss is $55,000.

Pioneer Square Vault Fire

SEATTLE – On Tuesday, February 15, 2017, at 8:03 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of 3rd Avenue South for smoke coming from a street hatchcover.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and confirmed the fire below. The Seattle Fire Department’s Vault Fire Response Group was dispatched who quickly applied CO2 to extinguish the fire. Seattle City Light was on scene to assist and worked with Incident Command staff to safely resolve the incident.

There were no reported injuries and no apparent power outages.

South Union Lake Residential Fire

SEATTLE – On Sunday, February 12, 2017, at 9:52 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 400 block of Minor Avenue N for an unoccupied house fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a vacant single-family residence with light smoke visible on the second floor. They quickly applied water and opened entry ways for ventilation. Once inside the building, firefighters extinguished the fire, conducted primary and secondary searches, and ensured the fire had not spread. Firefighters remained overnight to provide a fire watch for this incident.

There were no reported injuries. The Seattle Police Department was on scene to assist and Seattle City Light notified for power.

Fire Investigation Unit members determined this fire as accidental. The fire ignited in the first floor living room due to improperly discarded smoking material. The estimated loss is $70,000.

Downtown Battery Acid Spill

SEATTLE – On Monday, January 30, 2017, at 3:23 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the area of 2nd Avenue S and S Marion Street for a battery acid spill from a semi-truck.

The Seattle Fire Department responded to a request to investigate contents leaking out of the back of a semi-truck. SFD’s Hazmat team responded and determined the spilled product to be battery acid. They tested for hazardous materials, applied acid neutralizer and diked the downhill area to contain the spill. Firefighters also stabilized the rear doors of the semi-truck which was damaged by the shifting load.

King County Metro assisted in towing the semi-truck up the street where it was parked on a level surface, preventing further leakage. Firefighters found 11 pallets of batteries and verified that the leaking had stopped.

There were no reported injuries. Seattle Police Department, NRC Environmental Services, Seattle Department of Transportation, and Seattle Public Utilities Spill Response were on-site to assist with this incident.
