The Community Education Room
The Community Education Room provides a great place for people of all ages and groups to gather. While children are playing with the model of the station, adults are learning the history of Seattle’s garbage and finding answers to common disposal questions like, “Bubble pack envelopes—Where does it go?”
The floor-to-ceiling windows in the Community Education Room overlook the tipping floor, showing first-hand how the piles of waste move through the station every day. Come gaze in awe at the 30-ton trucks dropping their 40-yard loads onto the tipping floor below!
Then, challenge yourself to match items for recycling, compost, and garbage carts in the waste sorting game. You’ll have to come see what happens when the items are correctly matched and the carts are unlocked…
More fun and interactive exhibits are waiting for you including a compactor model, maps, and flip panels!
The Reuse Donation Center
In partnership with Goodwill, the North Transfer Station now features a drop-off location for reusable household goods and electronics. Conveniently located in the separated Recycling and Reuse building, the center allows customers to drop-off reusable goods for free—without having to weigh in at the scale house first.
We hope you’ll join us to celebrate the latest additions to SPU’s North Transfer Station! Can’t make it to the open house? The Education Room during is open to the public during station hours (8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.), but please note that it is not staffed. Tours are not provided and the room is not available for private events. No food or beverages are allowed, but we encourage you to have a zero-waste picnic at play area outside of the facility.
