Detours at the Intersection of 23rd Avenue East and East John Street for the Next Two Weekends

SDOT advises travelers of weekend construction closures and detours at 23rd Ave East and East John St scheduled for October 22-23 and October 29-30 while crews complete work on the 23rd Avenue Corridor Improvements Project. Local access will be provided to residences and businesses. This schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.

From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, October 22-23 and October 29-30, travelers can expect:

  • The intersection of 23rd Ave E and E John St will be closed to traffic in all directions except for buses and commercial trucks, but local access to destinations near the intersection will be provided.
  • E Thomas St/E John St will be open for local access only between 19th Ave E and E Madison St.
  • 23rd Ave E will be open for local access only between E Aloha St and E Madison Street.
  • Detours around the intersection of 23rd Ave and E John St include:
    • Southbound 23rd Ave E traffic will follow a detour on E Aloha St to 19th Ave E. To return to 23rd Ave E, use E Madison St.
    • Northbound 23rd Ave remains closed between E Union and E Madison streets; drivers will follow the regular construction detour on Martin Luther King Jr Way, then take E Madison St to 19th Ave. To return to 23rd Ave E, use E Aloha St.
    • Westbound E John St traffic will follow a detour on E Madison St. To return to E Thomas St, use 19th Ave.
    • Eastbound E Thomas St traffic will follow a detour on 19th Ave E to E Madison St.
  • Buses for King County Metro route 8 will follow a temporary construction detour on E Madison St between 19th Ave E and E John St; buses for routes 43 and 48 will continue to run on their current weekend service routes through the intersection during the work.

Pedestrian crossings will be maintained and clearly marked. SDOT would like to thank the public for its patience while this work is completed.
