Detours at 23rd Ave and E Madison St Intersection September 17-18; Northbound 23rd Ave Closure Extended

SDOT reminds travelers of weekend construction, detours, and an intersection closure at 23rd Ave and E Madison St September 17 – 18 while crews complete work on the 23rd Avenue Corridor Improvements Project. Following the completion of this weekend’s work, crews will extend the closure of northbound 23rd Avenue one additional block from East Madison Street to East John Street. Local access will be provided to residences and businesses. This schedule subject to change.

From 7 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, to 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, travelers can expect the following:

  • The intersection of 23rd Avenue and East Madison Street will be closed to traffic in all directions, but local access to destinations near the intersection will be provided.
  • East Madison Street between 19th Avenue and East John Street will be open for local access only.
  • 23rd Avenue between East John Street and East Union Street will be open for local access only.
  • Detours around the intersection of East Madison Street and 23rd Avenue include:
    • For southbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will follow a detour via East John Street, continuing on East Thomas Street to 19th Avenue. To return to 23rd Avenue, use East Union Street.
    • Northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between East Union and East Madison streets; drivers will follow the regular construction detour from East Union Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way to East John Street where they can return to 23rd Avenue.
    • For westbound East Madison Street traffic, drivers will take East John Street to East Thomas Street. To return to East Madison Street, use 19th Avenue.
    • For eastbound East Madison Street traffic, drivers will take 19th Avenue to East Thomas Street, continuing on East John Street to return to East Madison Street.

Following the completion of this weekend’s work through the end of construction in early 2017, travelers can expect the following:

  • The northbound closure of 23rd Avenue from East Union Street to East Madison Street will be extended one additional block, from East Madison Street to East John Street.
    • Northbound drivers will continue to follow the regular construction detour from East Union Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way to East John Street where they can return to 23rd Avenue.
    • Westbound East Madison Street drivers will take East John Street to reach northbound 23rd Avenue.
    • Eastbound East Madison Street drivers will take 19th Avenue to East Thomas Street, continuing on East John Street to reach northbound 23rd Avenue.

Pedestrian crossings will be maintained and clearly marked. SDOT would like to thank the public for its patience while this work is completed.
