Detours at the 23rd Ave Intersections of E Jefferson St and E Union St this Weekend

SDOT advises travelers of construction and detours at the 23rd Avenue intersections of East Jefferson Street and East Union Street this weekend as part of the 23rd Avenue Corridor Improvements Project. This schedule is weather dependent and subject to change. Please see below for details.

Partial closure of the East Jefferson Street Intersection

From 7 p.m. on Friday, May 6, to 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, travelers can expect the following:

  • The west side of the East Jefferson Street and 23rd Avenue intersection will be closed to eastbound and westbound traffic; 23rd Avenue will remain open to northbound and southbound traffic through the intersection.
  • East Jefferson Street will be open only for local access between 21st Avenue and 23rd Avenue.
  • Detours around the intersection of East Jefferson Street and 23rd Avenue include:
    • For eastbound East Jefferson Street traffic, drivers will take 14th Avenue to East Cherry Street. To return to East Jefferson Street, use Martin Luther King Jr Way.
    • Access to Ezell’s Famous Chicken will be maintained off of 23rd Avenue; the business’s East Jefferson Street driveway will be closed during this work.

Full closure of the East Union Street Intersection

From 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, to 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, travelers can expect the following:

  • The East Union Street and 23rd Avenue intersection will be closed to traffic in all directions, but local access to destinations near the intersection will be provided.
  • East Union Street will be open only for local access between 14th Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr Way.
  • Northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between East Cherry Street and East Union Street.
    • Two-way local access for residents of The Central Apartments will be provided on 23rd Avenue via East Spring Street.
    • 23rd Avenue will be open only for southbound local access between East Spring Street and East Cherry Street.
  • Detours around the intersection of East Union Street and 23rd Avenue include:
    • For southbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will follow a detour via East Madison Street to 14th Avenue, with a left on East Cherry Street to return to 23rd Avenue.
    • For northbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will take East Cherry Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way. To return to 23rd Avenue, take East Madison Street to East John Street.
    • For eastbound East Union Street traffic, drivers will take 14th Avenue to East Cherry Street. To return to East Union Street, use Martin Luther King Jr Way.
    • For westbound East Union Street traffic, drivers will take Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Cherry Street. To return to East Union Street, use 14th Avenue.

Pedestrian crossings will be maintained and clearly marked. SDOT would like to thank the public for its patience while this work is completed.
