23rd Avenue Detours This Weekend at East Cherry and South Jackson Street Intersections; Updated Schedule for East Yesler Way Detours

SDOT is advising travelers of weekend construction, detours, and intersection closures on 23rd Avenue at the South Jackson Street intersection and on southbound 23rd Avenue from East Cherry Street to East Jefferson Street while crews complete work on the 23rd Avenue Corridor Improvements Project. The schedule for upcoming detours at the East Yesler Way intersection has also been modified. Please see below for details. Local access will be provided to residences and businesses. This schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.

Full intersection closure at East Cherry St and 23rd Ave, Feb. 19 – 20; southbound 23rd Avenue closure from East Cherry Street to East Jefferson Street, Feb. 20 – 22

From 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, travelers can expect the following:

  • The intersection of East Cherry Street and 23rd Avenue will be closed to traffic in all directions.
  • East Cherry Street will be open only for local access from 21st Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr Way.
  • Southbound 23rd Avenue will be open only for local access between East Union Street and East Cherry Street; regular southbound access will resume at East Jefferson Street.
  • Northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between South Jackson and East Union streets.
  • Detours around the intersection of East Cherry Street and 23rd Avenue include:

o             For northbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will follow the regular construction detour from South Jackson Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Union Street, where they can return to 23rd Avenue.

o             For southbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will follow a detour via East Union Street to 14th Avenue, with a left on East Jefferson Street to return to 23rd Avenue.

o             For westbound East Cherry Street traffic, drivers will take Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Union Street. To return to East Cherry Street, use 14th Avenue.

o             For eastbound East Cherry Street traffic, drivers will take 21st Avenue to East Jefferson Street, following 23rd Avenue south to East Yesler Way.

From 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 to 2 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, travelers can expect the following:

  • Southbound 23rd Avenue will be closed from East Cherry Street to East Jefferson Street; eastbound and westbound travel at the intersection of East Cherry Street and 23rd Avenue will be maintained.

o             Southbound 23rd Avenue traffic will follow a detour via East Cherry Street to 21st Avenue. Drivers should take East Jefferson Street to return to 23rd Avenue.

Full intersection closure at South Jackson Street and 23rd Avenue South, Feb. 20 – 21

Beginning at 2 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 through 11 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21, travelers can expect:

The South Jackson Street and 23rd Avenue South intersection will be closed to traffic in all directions.

  • South Jackson Street between 20th Avenue South and Martin Luther King Jr Way will be open for local access only.
  • 23rd Avenue between East Yesler Way and South King Street will be open for local access only; northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between South Jackson Street and East Union Street.
  • In the event of a weather cancellation, crews will close the intersection Feb. 27 – 28.
  • Detours around the intersection of South Jackson Street and 23rd Avenue South include:

o             For southbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will follow a detour via East Yesler Way to 20th Avenue South, continuing on South Judkins Street to 23rd Avenue.

o             For northbound 23rd Avenue traffic, take South Judkins Street to 20th Ave South to East Yesler Way to Martin Luther King Jr Way, returning to 23rd Avenue at East Union Street.

o             For westbound South Jackson Street traffic, drivers will take Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Yesler Way. To return to South Jackson Street, use 20th Avenue South.

o             For eastbound South Jackson Street traffic, drivers will take 20th Ave South to East Yesler Way. To return to South Jackson Street, use Martin Luther King Jr Way.

Weekday Detours at 23rd Avenue and East Yesler Way Feb. 24 – 29

The schedule for weekday closures at the East Yesler Way intersection has been updated from the previous traffic advisory. Throughout the weekday closures Feb. 24 – 29, travelers can expect:

  • Southbound traffic on 23rd Avenue will be maintained at all times; northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between South Jackson and East Union streets.
  • Northbound drivers on 23rd Avenue will follow the regular detour on South Jackson Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Union Street where they can return to 23rd Avenue.
  • There will be partial eastbound and westbound closures on the dates specified below, but the intersection will be re-opened to eastbound and westbound traffic the weekend of Feb. 27 – 28.

On Feb. 24 – 26, travelers can expect:

  • The intersection at East Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue will be fully closed to eastbound traffic; westbound traffic will be able to travel south at the intersection.
  • East Yesler Way will be open for local access only between 20th Avenue South and 22nd Avenue.
  • Detours around the intersection of East Yesler Way at 23rd Avenue include:

o             For eastbound traffic on East Yesler Way, drivers will take 20th Avenue South to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use Martin Luther King Jr Way.

o             For westbound traffic on East Yesler Way, drivers will take 23rd Avenue South to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use 20th Avenue South.

On Feb. 17 – 19, travelers can expect:

  • The intersection at East Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue will be fully closed to westbound traffic; eastbound traffic will be able to travel south at the intersection.
  • East Yesler Way will be open for local access only between Martin Luther King Jr Way and 24th Avenue.
  • Detours around the intersection of East Yesler Way at 23rd Avenue include:

o             For westbound traffic on East Yesler Way, drivers will take Martin Luther King Jr Way to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use 20th Avenue South.

o             For eastbound traffic on East Yesler Way, drivers will take 23rd Avenue South to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use Martin Luther King Jr Way.
