23rd Avenue Detours at East Cherry Street and East Madison Street Intersections This Weekend

SDOT is advising travelers of weekend construction, detours, and a full intersection closures on 23rd Avenue at the East Cherry Street and East Madison Street intersections while crews complete work as part of the 23rd Avenue Corridor Improvements Project. Local access will be provided to residences and businesses. This schedule is weather dependent and subject to change. Please see below for details.

Full intersection closure at East Cherry Street and 23rd Avenue, Feb. 5 – 8

From 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5 to 6 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, travelers can expect the following:

  • The intersection of East Cherry Street and 23rd Avenue will be closed to traffic in all directions.
  • East Cherry Street will be open only for local access from 21st Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr Way.
  • Southbound 23rd Avenue will be open only for local access between East Union Street and East Cherry Street; regular southbound access will resume at East Jefferson Street.
  • Northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between South Jackson and East Union streets.
  • Detours around the intersection of East Cherry Street and 23rd Avenue include:

o        For northbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will follow the regular construction detour from South Jackson Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Union Street, where they can return to 23rd Avenue.

o        For southbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will follow a detour via East Union Street to 14th Avenue, with a left on East Jefferson Street to return to 23rd Avenue.

o        For westbound East Cherry Street traffic, drivers will take Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Union Street. To return to East Cherry Street, use 14th Avenue.

o        For eastbound East Cherry Street traffic, drivers will take 21st Avenue to East Jefferson Street, following 23rd Avenue south to East Yesler Way.

Full intersection closure at East Madison Street and 23rd Avenue, Feb. 6 – 7

Beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 through 10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, travelers can expect:

  • The East Madison Street and 23rd Avenue intersection will be closed to traffic in all directions.
  • East Madison Street between 19th Avenue and 23rd Avenue will be open for local access only.
  • 23rd Avenue between East John Street and East Union Street will be open for local access only.
  • Detours around the intersection of East Madison Street and 23rd Avenue include:

o        For southbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will follow a detour via East John Street to East Thomas Street to 19th Avenue. To return to 23rd Avenue, use East Union Street.

o        Northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between South Jackson Street and East Union Street. Drivers will follow the regular construction detour on Martin Luther King Jr Way, continuing on Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Madison Street where they can return to 23rd Avenue via East John Street.

o        For westbound East Madison Street traffic, drivers will take East John Street and continue on East Thomas Street. To return to East Madison Street, use 19th Avenue.

o        For eastbound East Madison Street traffic, drivers will take 19th Avenue to East Thomas Street and continue on East John Street before returning to East Madison Street.
