On Thursday, November 12, the City of Seattle will conduct transit lane enforcement on Howell Street from 8th Avenue to Boren Avenue and blocking the box enforcement on Howell at 9th Avenue. Officers from the Seattle Police Department supported by Seattle Department of Transportation staff will enforce posted transit and blocking the box restrictions from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
With 45 percent of downtown commuters using transit, the enforcement work will help ensure the reliable and efficient movement of transit riders along Seattle’s important bus corridors. Blocking the intersection enforcement helps address vehicles that illegally stop in the intersection impeding traffic.
Howell Street bus lanes have posted signs indicating they should be used as a through corridor by buses only on weekdays, Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Driving on Howell Street in violation of posted restrictions is a violation of SMC 11.53.230 (traveling in a bus only or BAT lane). Blocking an intersection is a violation of SMC 11.50.070 (Obstructing traffic at traffic-control signals). These individual violations can result in a fine of $136.
