Detours on 23rd Avenue at East Yesler Way and East Cherry Street September 14 – 25

The Seattle Department of Transportation advises travelers of upcoming weekday and weekend construction for the 23rd Avenue Corridor Improvements Project that will cause detours and travel delays. See descriptions of upcoming activities below. These activities are weather dependent.

Partial intersection closure at East Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue, weekdays Sept. 14 – 25

The intersection of East Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue will be partially closed on weekdays from Sept. 14 to Sept. 25 as crews complete demolition and paving. Crews will divide the work into two one-week closures of half of the intersection, beginning with the west side followed by the east side.

Throughout the duration of the East Yesler Way work:

Southbound traffic on 23rd Avenue will be maintained at all times; northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between South Jackson and East Cherry streets.

Northbound drivers on 23rd Avenue will follow the regular detour on South Jackson Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Cherry Street where they can return to 23rd Avenue.

There will be partial eastbound and westbound closures during the week, but the intersection will be opened to eastbound and westbound traffic over the weekends of Sept.19 and Sept. 26.

During the first week (Monday, Sept. 14 to Friday, Sept. 18):

The intersection at East Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue will be fully closed to eastbound traffic; westbound traffic will be able to travel south at the intersection.

East Yesler Way will be local access only between 20th Avenue South and 22nd Avenue

Detours around the intersection of East Yesler Way at 23rd Avenue include:

  • For eastbound traffic on East Yesler Way, drivers will take 20th Avenue South to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use Martin Luther King Jr Way.
  • For westbound traffic on East Yesler Way, drivers will take 23rd Avenue to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use 20th Avenue South.

During the following week (Monday, September 21 to Friday, September 25):

The intersection at East Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue will be fully closed to westbound traffic; eastbound traffic will be able to travel south at the intersection.

East Yesler Way will be local access only between Martin Luther King Jr Way and 24th Avenue.

Detours around the intersection of East Yesler Way at 23rd Avenue include:

  • For westbound traffic on East Yesler Way, drivers will take Martin Luther King Jr Way to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use 20th Avenue South.
  • For eastbound traffic on East Yesler Way, drivers will take 23rd Avenue South to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use Martin Luther King Jr Way.

East Cherry Street intersection closure, Sept. 18 – 21

Crews will fully close the intersection of East Cherry Street and 23rd Avenue the weekend of Sept. 18 from at 7 p.m. Friday to Sept.18 through 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21. Local access will be provided for residents and businesses.

East Cherry Street will be local access only from 21st Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr Way.

23rd Avenue will be local access only between East Union Street and East Cherry Street in both directions; one-way southbound access will resume south of East Jefferson Street; northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between South Jackson and East Cherry streets.

Detours around the intersection of East Cherry Street at 23rd Avenue include:

  • For southbound traffic on 23rd Avenue, drivers will follow a detour via East Union Street to 14th Avenue, with a left on East Jefferson Street to return to 23rd Avenue.
  • For northbound traffic on 23rd Avenue, drivers will follow the regular construction detour on South Jackson Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way but continue to East Union Street, where they can return to 23rd Avenue.
  • For westbound traffic on East Cherry Street, drivers will take Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Union Street. To return to East Cherry Street, use 14th Avenue South.
  • For eastbound traffic on East Cherry Street, drivers will take 21st Avenue to East Jefferson Street, following 23rd Avenue south to East Yesler Way.

Flaggers and uniformed police officers will be present to manage traffic and assist pedestrians.

Pedestrian crossings will be maintained and businesses will remain open and accessible.
