East Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue intersection detour this weekend, Aug. 28–31, weather permitting

The Seattle Department of Transportation advises travelers of weekend construction, detours, and a full intersection closure at the intersection of East Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue while crews begin demolition and paving work as part of the 23rd Avenue Corridor Improvements Project. The intersection will be fully closed to all directions of travel, though local access up to the intersection will be provided for residents and businesses to reach their driveways. This work is weather dependent and may need to be rescheduled.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 through 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, travelers can expect the following:

The East Yesler Way and 23rd Avenue intersection will be closed to traffic in all directions.

East Yesler Way will be open only for local access between 20th Avenue South and Martin Luther King Jr Way.

23rd Avenue southbound lanes will be open only for local access between East Jefferson Street and South Jackson Street, with two-way access between South Main Street and East Yesler Way for local access to residences and businesses; northbound 23rd Avenue remains closed between South Jackson and East Cherry Street.

Detours around the intersection of East Yesler Way at 23rd Avenue

For southbound 23rd Avenue traffic, drivers will follow a detour:

  • Heading east via East Cherry Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way, with a right on South Jackson Street to return to 23rd Avenue South.
  • Heading west via East Jefferson Street to 14th Avenue, with a left on South Jackson Street to return to 23rd Avenue South

For northbound 23rd Avenue, traffic, drivers will follow the regular construction detour on South Jackson Street to Martin Luther King Jr Way to East Cherry Street, where they can return to 23rd Avenue.

For westbound East Yesler Way traffic, drivers will take Martin Luther King Jr Way to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use 20th Avenue South

For eastbound East Yesler Way traffic, drivers will take 20th Avenue South to South Jackson Street. To return to East Yesler Way, use Martin Luther King Jr Way.

Eastbound drivers on East Jefferson Street will be directed to turn right on 14th Ave to East Yesler Way, then follow the eastbound detour above.

Flaggers and police officers will be present to manage traffic and assist pedestrians.

Pedestrian crossings will be maintained and businesses will remain open and accessible.
