Police arrested a 22-year-old man Saturday at the Ballard Seafood Fest after he shouted slurs and attacked a gay couple with a skateboard.
Officers were working an emphasis patrol near Ballard Avenue NE and NW Vernon Place around 9:30 PM when witnesses approached them and reported a disturbance down the block.
Officers then saw a 22-year-old man walking toward them with a skateboard in his hands, followed closely by a second man, who called out to officers and said he’d just been attacked.
The victim told officers he and his boyfriend were walking down the street holding hands when the suspect began shouting anti-gay slurs at them, and then rushed toward them while swinging his skateboard. The suspect missed the men, and then turned and fled.
When questioned about the incident, the suspect informed officers he was “just chilling,” and was having a “bad night.”
Police arrested the 22-year-old man and booked him into the King County Jail for investigation of malicious harassment, Washington’s hate crime statute.
