This weekend the Seattle Department of Transportation will extend the northbound Business and Access Only lane (BAT lane) on Fourth Avenue South to reach further south, from South Weller Street to South Royal Brougham Way. SDOT is doing this work in coordination with Metro Transit, Sound Transit and Community Transit to help keep buses moving.
Traffic crews will work on both Saturday and Sunday, from 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to extend the BAT lane. At times the crews will close two northbound, right hand lanes on Fourth Avenue South as needed for striping the pavement.
The BAT lane will be in operation in time for the Monday morning commute. The lane will be reserved for buses and right turning vehicles weekdays during peak travel times, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. People on bicycles may also use the BAT lane. Other traffic must use the general purpose lanes during morning and afternoon commute periods.
Buses coming from the Metro’s Ryerson Base located on Fourth Avenue South and South Royal Brougham Way will benefit from the extended BAT lane, as well as Sound Transit and Community Transit buses serving downtown.
By easing buses through this congested area we will help them keep on schedule, maintaining transit as a viable option for Seattle travelers.
