Malfunctioning Food Smoker Causes $30k Damage to Ballard Restaurant

January 6—Fire Investigators determined a malfunctioning electric food smoker caused a fire inside a locked bar and restaurant in the Crown Hill neighborhood of Ballard.

At 4:22 a.m., a 911 call came into firefighter dispatchers reporting a fire in the kitchen of a bar located in the 800 block of NW 85th Street. Firefighters arrived on scene and found flames blowing through a window and a well-involved kitchen fire inside the restaurant.

Within 11 minutes, firefighters had the fire under control. The fire was extinguished in 30 minutes.

Fire Investigators determined the cause was accidental after a malfunctioning food smoker ignited nearby combustible materials. Fire crews confined the flames to the kitchen area. The damage estimate is $30,000.

There were no injuries.
