Seattle Animal Shelter hosted temporary pet shelter at free medical clinic event

The Seattle Animal Shelter hosted a temporary pet shelter at the Remote Area Medical event Oct. 23-26 at Seattle Center. Animal shelter staff and volunteers were on-site each day to care for pets whose owners were attending the free medical clinic inside Key Arena.

The Seattle Animal Shelter was honored to take part in this important event, which provided free medical, dental and vision care to 3,400 people. Shelter staff utilized the pet emergency trailer to establish a temporary pet shelter on the Seattle Center campus during the event. The trailer, purchased several years ago with a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, is part of the City’s emergency preparedness plans and is equipped with supplies to support pets.

“We wanted to lend a helping hand to community members who needed a safe place for their pets while attending to their own medical needs,” says Seattle Animal Shelter Director Don Jordan.

Each day, beginning at midnight, shelter staff and volunteers opened the temporary pet shelter and began greeting people arriving for the clinic. In addition to caring for some wonderful dogs, pet shelter workers helped clinic-goers navigate the campus, provided vouchers for free spay and neuter surgeries and made memorable connections with community members.

The Seattle Animal Shelter is thankful to Seattle Center, Remote Area Medical, Public Health of Seattle and King County, and the many other organizations that drove the event and invited the shelter to participate. Likewise, thanks are due to Regional Animal Services of King County for its partnership in hosting the temporary pet shelter, and to Mud Bay, Good Neighbor Vet, ACCES, and Ballard Animal Hospital for their support.
