Weekend traffic: Seafair events, Bite of Seattle, and Sounders, July 18-20

Seattle traffic will be lively with thousands headed to community festivals and parades, and to various foot, boat and swimming competitions around the city this weekend. The events expected to draw the most attendees are the Bite of Seattle at Seattle Center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; and the Sounders at Centurylink Field on Saturday afternoon.

Traffic on freeways and major arterials into the city will be complicated by construction on WSDOT’s Interstate 90 — only one westbound lane of I-90 will remain open between Bellevue and Mercer Island. There could be significant backups on alternate routes depending on how many drivers venture forth from the east side into downtown Seattle. For more information, see WSDOT’s website, http://tinyurl.com/l53s9cs .

To let someone else negotiate traffic for you, try public transit or carpool this weekend. Also, although showers are forecast, bicycling is likely to be popular. To avoid traffic backups altogether, it may be a good time to stay close to home.
