Closure of Fifth Avenue N at Mercer Street this weekend, May 16-19

The Seattle Department of Transportation reminds travelers of the closure of the intersection of Fifth Avenue North and Mercer Street scheduled for tonight, May 16 to Monday, May 19.

Beginning this evening, May 16 at 11:30 p.m. through Monday, May 19 at 5 a.m., the intersection of Fifth Avenue North and Mercer Street will be fully closed to traffic to accommodate roadway excavation and concrete paving. Fifth Avenue North will be fully closed between Republican and Roy streets and Mercer Street will be fully closed to traffic between Fourth Avenue North and Taylor Avenue North. During the closure:

  • Travelers heading east on Mercer Street will be detoured south onto Queen Anne Avenue North toward Denny Way.
  • Travelers heading north on Fifth Avenue North will be detoured onto westbound Republican Street and northbound Fourth Avenue North to reconnect with westbound Mercer or Roy streets.
  • Travelers heading south on Fifth Avenue North will be detoured east or west at Roy Street and should use southbound Taylor Avenue North to continue east towards I-5 on Mercer Street or downtown via Dexter Avenue North.
  • Travelers heading toward Queen Anne and Seattle Center from I-5 and Downtown should use westbound Broad Street, Denny Way, and northbound First Avenue North as alternate routes.
  • Eastbound Mercer Street between Taylor Avenue North and Dexter Avenue North will have one lane open during the weekend work. I-5, Broad Street, Dexter Avenue North, and SR 99 will remain open during the weekend work.
  • Mercer Street between Queen Anne Avenue North and Fourth Avenue North will remain open for local access only. Local access to businesses and properties will be maintained at all times.
  • Uniformed police officers will be present to facilitate traffic flow around the work zone.
  • Pedestrians will be detoured and advanced signage will be posted.
  • King County Metro buses will be rerouted around the closure. More information may be found at: http://metro.kingcounty.gov/.

Please note that work is weather dependent and may be cancelled and rescheduled for later dates if inclement weather occurs.

Reminder: Two-way traffic on Mercer Street between Fourth Avenue North and Fifth Avenue North opens Monday, May 19; single lane restrictions on Roy Street continue.

This week signal crews opened Mercer Street to two-way traffic between First Avenue North and Fourth Avenue North. Beginning Monday, May 19, Mercer Street will also open to two-way traffic on the block between Fourth Avenue North and Fifth Avenue North. Westbound traffic on Mercer Street will now be fully operating between Elliott Avenue and Fifth Avenue North. Please pay attention to street signs as travelers adjust to new traffic patterns.

Beginning as early as the week of May 19 you can expect to see the following changes on Roy Street between Fifth Avenue North and Queen Anne Avenue North:

  • Westbound Roy Street will be reduced to one lane while final channelization is put into place.
  • Parking temporarily restricted while channelization is completed.
  • Signals will be activated for two-way traffic on Roy Street starting at Fifth Avenue North and working toward Queen Anne Avenue North
  • Two-way traffic on Roy Street between Queen Anne Avenue North and Fifth Avenue North is anticipated to open following signal activation, weather permitting.
