Friday through Sunday, April 18 – 20, crowds of 20,000 or more are expected daily at the Convention Centedowntown for the Sakura Con 14. Sponsored by the Asian Northwest Cultural Education Association, this is the oldest “anime” (Japanese animation) convention in the Pacific Northwest. Other events taking place over the weekend are the Earth Day Run along Alki Beach in West Seattle on Saturday morning and a Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa Concert on Saturday evening at the CenturyLink Field WAMU Theatre. Motorists should anticipate some additional traffic associated with the events.
Friday, April 18
Seattle Symphony Friday Matinee Concert: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Benaroya Hall (200 University Street)
400 attending
School buses will drop off and pick up students on both sides of University Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue; the Seattle Police Department will assist with the bus traffic; expect congestion on surrounding streets.
Sakura-Con ’14: Friday 2 – 11 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. – 4 a.m. Sunday; Sunday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Washington State Convention Center – 800 Convention Place /Pike Street
20,000 attending per day
Expect heavy pedestrian traffic on adjacent streets.
Saturday, April 19
Earth Day Run: 9:30 – 11 a.m.
Alki Avenue SW – West Seattle
1,100 participants
Run route: Starts on Alki Avenue SW at 60th Avenue SW; moves east on Alki to Anchor Park (1100 Alki Avenue SW), makes a U-turn and heads back to starting point.
Run will close Alki Avenue SW from 60th Avenue SW to Anchor Park from 9 – 11 a.m.
Expect heavier traffic on streets next to Alki Avenue SW
